Dad named every field out loud

We gave this to my father for his seventieth and he stood in front of it for a long time naming fields to my kids. Tristan asked for our old survey and then asked which names we actually use out loud versus what's written on the deed, which is why the back quarter says Rocky instead of Lot 12.

The lane is exactly right

Third generation on this land and the thing I checked first was the lane, because it bends twice and every satellite image gets the second bend wrong. It's right on the map.

Our lake place, finally on a wall

Ordered the cottage after twenty-six summers there. The dock, the boathouse, the trail to the point are all on it. Maelle suggested we drop two of the smaller islands so the shoreline would read better at 16x20 and she was right.

Sold the farm, kept the map

We closed in April. I ordered this in February without telling anyone and gave it to my mother the week after the sale went through. She cried, which she does not do.

Contours make it

I expected boundaries. What I didn't expect was how much the contour lines change it — you can see the coulee drop away in the wood. That's the part everyone touches.

Better than I pictured

Sent a screenshot from the county mapping site and a bad phone photo of our hand-drawn trail map. Got a proof back that made sense of both.
